Lattre de Tassigny, Jean-Marie-Gabriel de

   Born in Mouilleron-en-Pareds, vendée, Jean-Marie-Gabriel de Lattre de Tassigny was made a general in 1939 and commanded the 14th Infantry Division in May and June 1940, which distinguished itself at Rethel at the beginning of world war II. In November 1942, at Montpellier, where he commanded the 17th Military Division in the armistice forces, he tried to go underground when the Germans invaded the free zone, but he was repudiated by the vichy government and imprisoned. He escaped and reached Algiers (September 1943) and, at the head of the 1st French Army, took part in the Allied landing (Provence, Saint-Tropez, August 16, 1944). General Lattre de Tassigny liberated Toulon, Marseille, Lyon, Dijon, and Alsace, crossing the Rhine and taking Karlsruhe, Fribourg, Stuttgart, Ulm, and Constance in Germany. on May 8, 1945, he accepted the German unconditional surrender at Berlin for France. From 1950 to 1952, he served as high commissioner and commander in chief in indochina. The rank of marshal of France was conferred on General Lattre de Tassigny posthumously in 1952.
